Keaton Asma:
I thought it was great because of the action. The special effects were great. My favorite part was the big battle because it had so much action. It’s about a new planet called Pandora. There’s a lot of cool animals on the planet…

Lynn “Fitness Instigator” Oprie:
I was not super excited to see “Avatar.” I was over being unduly inundated with the hype, the marketing and the general mania surrounding it. Every film that had come out thus far touting the “Incredible 3D” effects has been disappointing, at best.
And, “Avatar” was written by James Cameron. Okay…have any of you watched “Titanic” lately? The dialogue is just terrible in that flick. So, riddled with skepticism in regards to the script, the special effects and the disarming running time of over 3 hours (more including the 45 minutes of trailers and commercials before the film has even started) it took all the energy your Fitness Instigator could muster to drag her worked out bod to the local Cineplex and, FINALLY, get a gander at what just be a monumental waste of her time.

And guess what….

I have to agree with Keaton. The movie was awesome. And yes, the 3D was truly, drool-worthy. It was executed in a very intelligent way. It wasn’t just a scene here or there where a pole “pokes” you in the eye or a tire screeches off the screen and onto your lap (are you listening “Final Destination 3D"?!) Cameron’s use and evolution of the format emmersed the viewer into the film. It was subtle and effective. It made it easy to over look some, ironically, wooden performances (sorry, Sam Worthington. I just didn’t think you were all that great. Passable, uh yeah…great? Uh….) and some equally wooden dialogue. It would be unfair to use one or two quotes here, cuz that would leave out so many other not so great conversational moments.

The Love Story is about as fresh a week old Muffins. Let’s just say that it rang a bit like “Pocahontas 2-Electric Boogaloo.”

Bearing that in mind, I’d like to present the argument that one of my students presented to me that drove me to see a movie that I would have otherwise easily passed on…

“Okay…you saw ‘Titanic’, right? What do you remember most about that film? Was it the love story or that ship going down…”

Great argument. And “Avatar” is a great movie. I give it 7.9 Squats. Why not 10? The script is still pretty lame and the love story is worn thin. But will it win an Oscar? Think about it and give me 45 Jacks while you’re at it….

Keep going to the movies and don’t forget to get Extra Butter on your Popcorn!
